There’s smoke on the horizon and you’ll be able to see it from The Island stage this January. Catch two nights of country rock (or rockin’ country) with Georgia’s favorite sons, Blackberry Smoke. These shows promise to kick the 2023 concert season off in high-octane Southern style.
Atlanta’s Hardest Working Band
Band members spent their youth surrounded by a wide variety of musical influences that included local bluegrass, The Rolling Stones, Little Richard and even Black Sabbath. When the group formed in 2000, they had a lot of inspiration to pull from.
After releasing two well received albums, the band struck gold with their third record, Holding All the Roses. With it, they became the first independent band to have a number one hit on the Billboard Country Albums chart. Since then, the band has been busy, releasing six full-length albums total, six EPs and two live albums.
Blackberry Smoke has been on The Tonight Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Conan O’Brien, Live with Jools Holland and Last Call with Carson Daly. They’ve toured the world and played some of Europe’s biggest festivals including Glastonbury, Hellfest France and Download UK.
The South Comes North to Michigan
Blackberry Smoke’s latest album, You Hear Georgia, is roots music about judging a book by its cover. Vocalist/guitarist Charlie Starr recruited a host of guest star writers including Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Rickey Medlocke, Four Horsemen guitarist Dave Lizmi and ex Buckcherry guitarist Keith Nelson to produce the songs for the record.
Says Starr: “It’s like, ‘Okay, let’s just knock heads together and see what we come up with.’ And sometimes it’s magical.” The results are a compelling document of Southern music and Southern culture.
You’re sure to feel that magic when the legendary Blackberry Smoke takes the stage in The Island Showroom. Their sound is hard to pin down: Fuzzy guitars, soulful vocals, folksy melodies and bluesy breakdowns make the band an all American musical experience. They’ve toured with ZZ Top, Zac Brown Band and Eric Church.
