A Life of Illusion
Since he first volunteered for magician Harry Collins at the age of five, Kentucky native Lance Burton has been fascinated by magic. Inspired by the children’s book Magic Made Easy, Burton soon staged nickel performances for the neighborhood. Later, he reunited with Collins to learn all the elder magician’s secrets.
As a teenager, Burton took the top prize in his first magic competition. Shortly after his 20th birthday, he was awarded a “Gold Medal of Excellence” from the International Brotherhood of Magicians.
However, it was his appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1981 that launched Lance Burton’s career. For 12 minutes, he held the audience rapt and earned not only Johnny Carson’s respect but repeated invitations to return. Johnny called him “A beautiful, classy act, the best I’ve ever seen!”
Since those formative years, Burton has built an astounding career playing over 15,000 shows for audiences around the world.
How Did He Do That?
Known for his ability to conjure cards, doves and more from thin air, Lance Burton has one of the most impressive careers in magic history. In the magic community, he’s regarded as “The greatest stage magician of the past century.”
Burton has made dozens of late-night TV appearances for Jay Leno, David Letterman and Craig Ferguson. He also performed on his own series of NBC specials in the mid-1990s, beginning with Lance Burton Master Magician; The Legend Begins.
His latest touring show, “Lance Burton & Friends,” is billed as a mix of illusions, sleight of hand, audience participation and amazing guest stars. Chances are, Burton will add a few Michigan fans to the 15 million he already has around the world. Expect to be entertained, amused and bewildered, all at the same time.
